Relationship Biases

Relationships where one partner has ADHD can face unique challenges. Here are five potential negative issues:

  • Inconsistent Follow-Through:
    • ADHD can lead to difficulties with task completion, causing frustration when promises are broken or responsibilities are neglected. This can result in the non-ADHD partner feeling unreliable.
  • Emotional Dysregulation:
    • Individuals with ADHD may experience heightened emotional responses or impulsivity, leading to arguments or misunderstandings. This can create an environment of emotional volatility.
  • Communication Challenges:
    • Distractibility and inattentiveness can make it difficult for the ADHD partner to actively listen, leading to feelings of being unheard or ignored. This can cause resentment and disconnection.

  • Imbalance of Responsibilities:
    • The non-ADHD partner may feel they are carrying a disproportionate share of household chores, financial management, or parenting duties, leading to feelings of overwhelm and resentment. This can create a parent/child dynamic.
  • Feelings of Neglect or Rejection:
    • The non-ADHD partner may misinterpret ADHD symptoms, such as forgetfulness or distractibility, as a lack of care or interest. This can lead to feelings of loneliness, rejection, and insecurity.
